Picking pumpkin seeds

IMG_2283eMaisie wasn’t happy when her mini pumpkins from our annual trip to the maize maze started to rot.  Since she couldn’t save the pumpkins we decided to save the seeds and we’ll try growing them next year in our garden.

Not that I used fresh pumpkin (I used canned) but this Praline Pumpkin Cheesecake is pumpkin-y delicious.  Just click on the picture to be taken to the recipe.

Scooter time with Grandpa

Friday was a fun and busy day for Maisie.  It was Shop till you Drop at her gym which essentially meant that she got to go run around and have fun at the gym and I got some time to shop…or just relax, which is what I ended up doing.  After being at the gym Maisie went home with one of her teammates, Alyssa, where she spent the remainder of the afternoon playing and having a blast.  While at Alyssa’s house Maisie rode around on Alyssa’s scooter and when she got home asked if we could finally put hers together as I’ve had it out in the garage for months.

IMG_2532ePutting the scooter together sounded like a good Grandpa and Maisie activity.

IMG_2533eIt didn’t take long before the two of them were outside together.

IMG_2537eThey stayed out until Maisie got too cold to scooter any longer.

Are you a potato lover?  What about garlic?  Butter?  Well I adore all three and these Hasselback Potatoes with Garlic Sour Cream are just about the most delicious thing ever!  Click on the picture to check out the recipe and don’t hate me if you make these and can’t stop eating them, they’re honestly that wonderful.

Is she naughty or nice?

IMG_2512eThanksgiving night Maisie received an email video from Santa.  She was delighted with her message from Santa and also very happy to find out that she wasn’t on the naughty list.  This is Maisie’s third year receiving a video from Santa and I love that she still gets a thrill from the videos.

I mentioned before that I really wasn’t feeling Thanksgiving this year and as it was just five of us, Eammon, Maisie and I along with my parents, we enjoyed a very simple holiday meal.  For Thanksgiving dinner we dined on my Spice Rubbed Turkey with Cognac Gravy, chestnut stuffing, roasted asparagus, oven roasted potatoes, plain baked sweet potatoes and cranberry sauce.  For dessert I did make something new, well sort new as it’s an adaptation of my Rhubarb Crisp.  What I did was to bring in more of the seasonal flavors with the addition of apples and cranberries while also making it “safe” for Maisie and her newly found food allergies.  I posted the recipe for Apple, Cranberry & Rhubarb Crisp over on Cook Lisa Cook so just click on the picture to be taken to the recipe.

Girls having fun!

It’s been a busy week so of course I’m behind on my blog posting but I’ll keep posting and eventually I’ll get caught up.

Wednesday after TOPs practice Maisie’s friend and gymnastics teammate Aspen came over for a play date.  The girls had a blast playing together with laughs and giggles as they went from one activity to another.

IMG_2453eThere was dancing.

IMG_2456eToenail painting.

IMG_2458eOops… Glass nail polish bottle didn’t stand a chance against the tile floor.  Guess we’re done with that color.

IMG_2462eWith two gymnasts there was of course some gymnastics thrown in.

IMG_2468eSilly apple slice eating.

IMG_2472eAnd funny faces.

I don’t know what they did when they were off in Maisie’s room but from all the giggles I know that they had fun there too.  It’s always a good time when Maisie has friends come and play.

While my parents were here for Thanksgiving week we enjoyed one of my Mom’s recipes which is a favorite of Maisie’s, Grandma’s Teriyaki Steak.  I loved that I didn’t have to make any changes to my recipe once I saw that my say sauce was “safe” for Maisie and her newly found food allergies so we enjoyed our steak as we always have.  Click on the picture to be taken to the recipe.

Cookies with Grandma

Tuesday morning I had an appointment so I left a Maisie & Grandma home together with a cookie mix which was wheat, egg & dairy free so “safe” for Maisie and her newly found food allergies.

IMG_2421eI was out while Maisie and Grandma mixed, stirred and baked the cookies but once I got home the cookies were cool so it was time to decorate.  It was nice to find that the cookie icing, decorating sprinkles and sugar crystals which I had in the house were also “safe” for Maisie.

IMG_2428eMy cutie patootie thinking about her first taste of the frosted cookie.  She actually loves the cookies and I have to say, they’re not bad at all so we’ll be making them again.

IMG_2429eHappy bakers Grandma & Maisie after all the cookie baking and decorating was complete.

Though “safe” for Maisie and she has eaten it, it’s not one of her favorites but it is one of ours, Rum Cured Salmon.  This is a simple recipe which requires no cooking what-so-ever.  Click on the picture to be taken to the recipe.

First and third homeowners play

Almost 70 years ago my grandfather built a doll house for my Mother which she played with as a little girl, then I enjoyed it growing up and now Maisie is the third generation to play with the same house.

IMG_2407e Yesterday the first and third little girl owners of the doll house played together.

Are you prepared for Thanksgiving?  For some reason I’m just not feeling it this year.  I think between my recent bout of pneumonia, Maisie’s recently diagnosed food allergies, spending hours researching recipes, reading every label in the stores, trying recipes to find a new way of cooking and feeding Maisie that’s safe and enticing for her, along with just general busyness, insomnia and feeling run down…well I guess it’s no wonder that I’m not in the holiday mood.  I did though get my act together enough to buy a turkey and get the spice rub on it so that it will be ready to cook on Thursday.  Since it’s just the five of us, Maisie, Eammon and I along with my parents, it’s going to be very simple, easy, all safe for Maisie and no fuss…but it will still of course be delicious so no worries there.  Just like last year I’m serving Spice Rubbed Turkey with Cognac Gravy so I know the turkey will be wonderful.  Click on the picture to be taken to the recipe.

Making Pilgrim Hats

IMG_2357eThursday was Maisie’s last day of school before Thanksgiving break and all the children in Maisie’s class joined together with the fourth grade and kindergarten class to share a Thanksgiving feast.  Last year Maisie and I made Pilgrim hats for her class and they were a huge hit so we decided to make them again this year for all the children attending the feast.

IMG_2361eMaisie did a good job dipping the marshmallow in the chocolate and then getting it onto the cookie.  Once the chocolate set I piped on the buckle.

IMG_4192[2]This picture is from last year because by the time I did the piping it was late at night and I just totally forgot to take a picture but trust me, this years hats looked exactly like these and the children loved them as much this year as they did last year.

It’s funny, when I went back to last years post to snag the picture of the finished hats I saw the pictures of Maisie making them last year and her expressions in the photos are oh-so similar.  Also, other than when she’s at gymnastics, Maisie almost never wears her hair in a ponytail yet both times that she’s made these hats her hair has been pulled back.

IMG_4177[2] (1)Thankfully the pink unibrow and the one sided heavily applied make-up wasn’t repeated this year.  I find it funny to see how similar last years photos are to this years pictures.

IMG_4180[2]

A big thank you to everyone who commented and emailed suggestions, links and well wishes in helping me find wheat, milk and egg free foods for my girl.  I am beginning to find my way and am less freaked out now that I am finding food substitutions for many of her favorites.  We are finding new foods, I have found many recipes and hopefully soon we’ll be in the groove and it will be easy…but this may be our last year of making these Pilgrim hats…oh well.

New recipe posted over on Cook Lisa Cook and though not part of Maisie’s new diet, these Apple Dumplings are sure easy to make and delicious.  Click on the picture to be taken to the recipe.

HELP!!! What do I feed her?

Last Friday I took Maisie in for her yearly physical and while the doctor said she was doing great and she’s healthy, strong and growing along her percentile curve she was concerned about Maisie’s allergies.  We have never had Maisie tested for allergies and I guess that it was always assumed that she had pollen allergies but lately pollen counts are at almost zero and Maisie is still suffering.  So last Friday they drew blood and today the doctor called with the results and that’s why I need your help.  Maisie’s tests showed that she didn’t have any pollen or environmental allergies but that she is allergic to egg whites, milk and wheat.  Just frikkin great because that accounts for all her favorite foods.

IMG_2204eIt’s ironic because just yesterday I posted that Maisie eats Nutella on wheat bread almost every morning and now there is nothing in that sentence which she can have as obviously the bread has wheat and Nutella contains milk…Cr@p!!

Maisie’s favorite foods are pasta, cheese, Nutella, eggs and dumplings and it’s from the cheese, Nutella, eggs and dumplings where she gets most of her protein as she’s not a huge meat eater.  So my dear helpful readers I need your help with food options for my girl as I have no idea what to feed her now that I need to remove egg whites, milk and wheat from her diet and I’m freaking out!  Truly, anyone who has experience with this I would appreciate your comments.

In other food related news, I still have to plan my Thanksgiving menu but just haven’t had time to think about it yet.  I do know that we are going to have Spice Rubbed Turkey with Cognac Gravy, the same turkey as last year as it was freaking amazing and I don’t even really care for turkey but I’m looking forward to having this one again.  Past the turkey I just don’t know yet but I’ll figure it out.  If you’re still looking for a fabulous turkey recipe, just click on the picture to be taken to the recipe.
